Methodology and Data
The SDG Assessment for the State Level for Malaysia takes account of performance of indicators found in United Nations Official SDGIndicator List and Sustainable Development Report SDG Indicator List.
SDGs are collection of 17 interlinked goals which serves "the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all (United Nations Environment Management Group)." Sustainable Development is "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987)."
On 25th September 2015, Malaysia together with 192 countries in the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and these 17 Goals call upon countries to build not only more sustainable development, but also resilient and inclusive development for all.
Leveraging on the methodology provided in Sustainable Development Report (SDR), the SDG assessment was done for all the states and Federal Territories. For more on the methodology visit: https://dashboards.sdgindex.org/downloads

The Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development is a regional center of excellence that advances the achievement of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, tackling the sustainability agenda through education, training, research and policy advisory. The Center has a focus on research and policy practice, delivering world-class programs to train students, practitioners and policy leaders on sustainable initiatives while working in collaboration with industry, government bodies, civil societies and universities worldwide, to develop solutions related to the SDGs.
Launched in December 2016, the Center operates out of Sunway University under the supervision of Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, one of the world’s leading experts in sustainable development. The Center was borne out of a $10 million gift from the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) to the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) mobilizes scientific and technical expertise from academia, civil society, and the private sector to support practical problem solving for sustainable development at local, national, and global scales. The SDSN was launched in 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. The SDSN is building national and regional networks of knowledge institutions, creating research and policy analysis tools, and educating on the SDGs through the SDG Academy, its flagship online education initiative.
Established in 2013, the SDSN Malaysia Leadership Council was previously under the leadership of Tan Sri Zakri Abdul Hamid with the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) as Secretariat. As of January 2019, YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group was appointed Chair of the Leadership Council along with the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development (JSC), housed at Sunway University, as Secretariat.
The SDSN Malaysia network aims to support the localization of SDGs and their implementation, develop long-term transformation pathways for sustainable development, promote education around Agenda 2030, and launch solution initiatives.
